It’s International Women’s day!
There is an International Women’s day for the same reason there is an International Men’s day.
To celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. Yes the day also challenges us to work towards women’s equality but it’s not just about that.
I love eventing and horse sport in general because it doesn’t matter your gender, you compete as an equal against all others. Sometimes your gender offers an advantage but in other ways it is a disadvantage hence equestrian sport being a level playing field. If you have talent you have talent, you just need the luck, money and importantly the horse.
Top of the World
Take Ros Canter, she may not be the tallest person in the world but she is one incredible horsewomen and she has the results to prove it. The current world champion who rode the showjumping round of her life with epic composure in Tryon in 2018. She rode with the definitive balls of steel that day!
The Year of the Pig
2019 was the year that Piggy March (nee French) started to really shine on the international circuit. She had been up there knocking on the door of a top level win for some time but 2019 was to be her year. But hey it was the Chinese year of the Pig so some would say it was fate. Not only did she win at Badminton, her first 5* win, but she went on to break the record for the highest number of FEI victories in a year.
Piggy has gone on to show it wasn’t just a lucky year either picking up 5 international wins and a further 6 top 3 placings during the shortened 2020 season from just 26 starts.
At the top of the game
Below are just a small number of female riders who either ride or have ridden at the very top level of the sport. Some are professional event riders, others amateurs but they are all women who have come through the levels to be at the top.
